Ex US Navy officer, Captain Amos Trent of the merchant ship Medea has his gun crew impressed by a Royal Navy warship. As a result he is unable to defend the ship when he is attacked by Barbary pirates and he and the crew along with their passengers are captured.
To save himself and his passengers from a life of slavery Trent feigns conversion to Islam so he can become one of the corsairs.
