During the Anglo-French campaign against slavers in the mid-19th century Midshipman Claude Sefton, age 18, with two years experience in the Royal Navy, is put in command of a slaving schooner captured off the coast of Angola. Whilst surviving attack by the slavers, sinking, and capture by African slave dealers, he displays courage and resourcefulness in re-capturing a British merchant vessel and rescuing his sister-in-law who is aboard.
