The 1984 film The Bounty was regarded as revisionist as it sought to more accurately reflect the original friendship between Bligh and Christian. It starred Anthony Hopkins as William Bligh and Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian. It was directed by Roger Donaldson with a screenplay by Robert Bolt.
