Featured Author

Each month I provide a short bio of one of the authors on the site. This month we will look at Frederick Chamier.

Frederick ChamierCaptain Frederick Chamier R.N. (1796-1870) entered the navy in 1809 aboard the Salsette, which took part in the Walcheren expedition, and served in Fame, Arethusa, Menelaus and Britomart. Between 1810 and 1827 he was employed chiefly in the Mediterranean but left the Navy as a commander in 1833 (he was promoted to captain in 1856). After leaving the navy he edited an important continuation of James' 'Naval History' and wrote his biography, Life of a Sailor, as well as several sea novels. Probably his most famous was Ben Brace, The Last of Nelson's Agamemnons telling Nelson's story from the point of view of Ben Brace who is said to be based on his coxswain.
