Alfred Mark Lansing (1921–1975) was born in Chicago, Illinois,. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1946, where he received a Purple Heart, he attended North Park College and then Northwestern University, majoring in journalism. He edited a weekly Illinois newspaper until 1949 and then joined the United Press becoming a freelance writer. He wrote for Reader's Digest and Time Inc. in New York and then became editor of the Bethel Home News.
