Edgar Stanton Maclay (1863-1919) was born in Foochow, China. He prepared for college under his mother's instruction until her death in 1879 after which he moved to the US and entered the classical course of Syracuse University. After completion of his studies he went to Germany, France and England where for over a year he researched American History.
