Jeffrey J. Safford (1934-2021) was born in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. He attended Tottenville High in New York City and then Wagner College in Staten Island on a baseball scholarship. He majored both in history and music. He went on to get a PhD in American History from Rutgers university.
His career was teaching in the History and Philosophy Department at Montana State University here he became professor emeritus of history. Long committed to historic preservation, he served as historian to the Montana Heritage Preservation and Development Commission and as a member of the State Historic Preservation Review Board.
