Richard Aveley (pseudonym) was born in on the north bank of the Thames Estuary, just inside the county of Essex. He was educated at the universities of London and Oxford, and has a doctoral degree in history. He has worked in the telecommunications industry, in publishing and in museums, and has held a number of teaching posts at UK universities. He has published non-fiction works in his academic specialism, but The Shipwright is his first novel. He is in his mid-forties and happily married
