This novel is a prequel to the At Home and at Sea series. Those books start at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Richard Giles is, by that time, a celebrated Captain when we meet him here, with a fortune he has made, which he is ready to invest in a country estate. Obviously, there must have been a backstory. This book is concerned with the first year or so after he becomes a lieutenant in the Navy.
