Bowlines –Tying together fact and fiction in maritime literature
Bowlines will be a unique occasion for those whose interests lie in maritime history and maritime literature to come together and share inputs from both these worlds.
The event will take place over two days, June 6th and 7th, within the setting of Exeter’s delightful Heritage Harbour.
Based in the city’s grade 1 listed seventeenth century Custom House and other historic buildings, delegates will be able to gain insights into current maritime writing from some of the country’s leading experts.
They will include; Dr. Sam Willis, Kate Jamieson, David Davies, Katie Daysh, Alaric Bond, Jo Stanley, Chris Durbin, Phillip K Allen, Roy & Lesley Adkins, Elaine Murphy.
In addition there will be panel discussions about the way forward for maritime history and literature. Involved in these will be David Davies (Chair of Society for Nautical Research) Hannah Cunliffe (Chief Executive, Historic Ships UK) Jonathan Turner (Chair, South West Maritime History Society) and Louise Sanger (Head of Research, Interpretation & Engagement at Lloyds Register Foundation.).
Additionally, on the evening of Saturday 7th, members of the Society for Nautical Research will be able to attend the organisation’s AGM within Exeter’s historic Guildhall and then enjoy the annual dinner at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Guest speaker at that event will be NAM Rodger, in conjunction with Exeter University’s Centre for Maritime Historical Studies.
Finally, Sunday 8th of June will be Exeter’s Heritage Harbour Festival. This is an annual celebration involving further talks, access to historic vessels, and the arrival of steam launches from the Steam Boat Association of Great Britain, plus music & song and a great deal more.
All in all, this is an event not to be missed by anyone with an interest in maritime history and literature.
