The ever-irascible Admiral “Jacky” Fisher, boss of the British Admiralty, promises his sister, the wife of the the shipping magnate Lord Jedmond, that his men will arrange for the body of her son to be shipped to London for burial. What he doesn’t tell her is that he’s also agreed with her husband that, while Carver and Banan are in Glasgow, they’ll just check that everything is above board about the naval architect’s tragic fall from a cliff near his home.
It’s early Spring 1905 and, at first, the task is anything but onerous for the two heroes. They have no complaints about being sent to such a beautiful location and even fewer about being asked to work in close proximity to two beautiful women.
But gradually the case becomes murkier and the personal dangers grow as they get sucked into several layers of an increasingly complex web of crime. As the deaths mount Carver has to struggle to keep Bill Banan out of trouble, even with the help of the dour Glasgow police inspector, Alexander Irvine.
