Jack Chanter, orphan, ex-boy seaman, is one of the lower forms of life in the Fleet Air Arm, a rating pilot - one of the hired help, the hacks, seldom allowed into a fighting squadron.

But when the savage Battle of the Atlantic begins, Chanter is suddenly in demand - by the Navy to fly a fighter from a tossing catapult against the deadly Focke-Wulf bombers, the "Scourge of the Atlantic"; by Greek shipping tycoon Odysseus Andros to save a precious ship from U-boats; by Jenny Adamson, famous Airwoman and canny Tyneside lass, to fill the void in her life and warm her bed.

Chanter at last feels needed, wahted. He is promoted, feted, decorated. But the placards outside the Palace almost destroy his new and brittle self. Only more action, another ship, can mend him......
