John Romer Dull is an American historian who specialises in the study of the diplomatic, military, and naval history of the United States and France during the colonial periods (1650–1774), the American Revolution (1774–1787), and the French Revolution through the end of the First French Empire (1789–1815).
He earned an AB from the University of Notre Dame (1964) and then enlisted for two years in the US Navy during the conflict in Vietnam. on his return he continued his studies and obtained a doctorate at Berkeley, University of California (1972)
he is the retired senior associate editor of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin series and author of the award-winning history The French Navy and American Independence: A Study of Arms and Diplomacy, 1774-1787.
